This bill relates to reporting requirements for lost or stolen firearms. The bill provides that an individual, firm, or corporation that owns a firearm who reports any loss or theft of the firearm to the law enforcement agency having jurisdiction over the location where the loss or theft of the firearm occurred or, if the location where the loss or theft of the firearm occurred is not known, to the law enforcement agency having jurisdiction over the location where the individual resides or the firm or corporation has its principal place of business shall have an affirmative defense against civil and criminal liability if the lost or stolen firearm is subsequently used to commit a crime or cause injury to another person. The report of a lost or stolen firearm shall include the following information, to the extent known: the caliber, make, model, manufacturer, serial number, any other distinguishing number or identification mark on the firearm, and any additional relevant information required by the law enforcement agency receiving the report. Any law enforcement agency receiving a report of a lost or stolen firearm shall provide the individual reporting the loss or theft with written confirmation of receipt of the report. The bill provides that an individual, firm, or corporation that fails to file a report when the individual, firm, or corporation knows or should know that a firearm under the ownership of the individual, firm, or corporation is lost or was stolen may be held liable if the firearm is subsequently used illegally.
